Journal Assignment
Journal Assignment
This assignment is the planning stage for the project
that you will be constructing
Sculpture 1 students:
On the first
page:
•Create a scale
drawing of a Louise Nevelson inspired assemblage relief sculpture that is at
least 8” wide x 12” tall x ¾” thick and no more than 12”
wide x 16” tall x 1 ¾” thick.
•The drawing of the
sculpture should contain at least 4 areas that contain formal
elements in
arrangements that exhibit variety.
•The sculpture will be
monochromatic- black, grey, or white. Reflect this in the
illustration of the sculpture.
On the next page:
•List and discuss the
materials that you intend to use. You have access to wood and some other
materials we have in the sculpture supply room. If you have ideas that require
materials that we do not have in the studio, you must provide the materials.
Remember the finish (paint) is part of your material needs.
Remember:
•Discuss any design or
supply ideas with your instructor in order to make the best design and
purchasing decisions.
•Craftsmanship is always a gradable
component of any project.

questions for back of paper rubric
When you have finished your paper sculpture, turn you assignment sheet over and reflect on the project by answering the following questions:
1. Did I use 6-9 strips of paper and vary the values in an effective way? How could I have done this more effectively?
2. How well did I direct the visual weight and create a balanced sculpture?
3. What other elements/principles can you discuss in your sculpture?
4. How well is your sculpture constructed? How could you improve the quality of construction?
5. How much thought did you put into the sculpture? Did you consider a design or did your sculpture just happen?
